Target Information
Specialized cells at the midline, which separates the left and right halves of the CNS, play key roles in directing growth cone behavior. In vertebrate spinal cord and other organisms, midline cells produce guidance cues such as nectins and slit, acting as attractants and repellents. Robo functions as an axon guidance receptor, part of the Ig superfamily, conserved across species. Robo1 and Robo2 are human homologs of the Drosophila Roundabout protein. Robo1 corresponds to the C. elegans gene sax3, while Robo2 corresponds to the zebrafish gene astray.
