Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that defends against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) into hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is further converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

SOD Isoforms

• SOD1 (Cu/Zn-SOD): Intracellular, homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme found in all eukaryotes.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial, tetrameric 80 kDa enzyme located in the mitochondrial matrix.
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for SOD1, delivers Cu to activate Cu/Zn-SOD.
