Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein essential for cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the adhesion complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with signaling complexes involving adenomatous polyposis coli protein and participates in Wnt/Wingless pathways, influencing morphogenesis and cell proliferation.
Beta-catenin is expressed in various hair follicle cells, basal and peripheral matrix cells, and outer/inner root sheath cells. Dysregulation of beta-catenin is implicated in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other cancers. In the nucleus, it coactivates Lef/Tcf transcription factors that drive expression of proliferation-related genes such as cyclin D and c-myc, linking beta-catenin to tumorigenesis in multiple solid tumors (breast, colon, liver, lung, gastric, prostate, skin).
