Target Information
DNA associates with histones and nuclear proteins to form chromatin. Chromatin remodeling is essential for transcriptional regulation, and histone acetylation plays a key role in this process. Acetylation alters nucleosomal conformation, increasing DNA accessibility to transcription factors.
Histone deacetylases (HDACs) reverse this process, leading to transcriptional silencing. HDAC9 and its isoform HDAC9a both contain catalytic domains responsible for deacetylase activity and repress MEF2-mediated transcription. These proteins are expressed in brain, skeletal muscle, kidney, placenta, and pancreas.
