Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses easily into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) upon neuronal injury.
NSE is one of three mammalian enolases—ENO1 (α), ENO2 (β), and ENO3 (γ)—with the γ-subunit expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. Antibodies to NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
Release of NSE into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury, and it is used clinically in evaluating stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated NSE levels are also associated with pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
