Target Information
Spectrins are filamentous cytoskeletal proteins acting as essential scaffolds that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. They form alpha and beta dimers, which associate into tetramers linked head-to-head. This gene encodes an alpha spectrin expressed in nonerythrocytic cells, involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
