Spectrins are filamentous cytoskeletal proteins that act as scaffold proteins to stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. They form alpha and beta dimers that associate into tetramers arranged head-to-head.
This gene encodes an alpha spectrin expressed in nonerythrocytic cells and is involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation.
Mutations in this gene cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternate splicing leads to multiple transcript variants.
