Target Information

Desmin (~53 kDa) is a muscle-specific intermediate filament protein predominantly expressed in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle cells. Its expression is regulated in a stage- and tissue-specific manner during muscle cell differentiation. In skeletal and cardiac muscle, desmin localizes to the Z-disk and intercalated disk regions. In smooth muscle, expression is more heterogeneous. Coexpression with vimentin has been observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. Altered desmin distribution is also noted in myocardial dysfunction.
