Target Information
This gene encodes a homolog to the E. coli alkB gene product, which is part of the adaptive response mechanism for DNA alkylation damage repair. It reverses alkylation damage via oxidative demethylation of 1-methyladenine and 3-methylcytosine.
The dioxygenase repairs alkylated single-stranded DNA and RNA containing 3-methylcytosine by oxidative demethylation, requiring molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate, and iron.
It may play a role in placental trophoblast lineage differentiation and exhibits DNA lyase activity, introducing double-stranded breaks at abasic sites. It cleaves both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA, showing greatest activity toward double-stranded DNA with two abasic sites.
