Target Information

G protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir3.1–Kir3.4) are coupled to numerous neurotransmitter receptors in the brain and are abundantly expressed in the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, neocortex, dentate gyrus, cerebellar cortex, and thalamus. Also known as GIRK channels, they localize to soma, dendrites, and axons of neurons. Gβγ subunits from G protein heterotrimers regulate Kir3 channel activity—Gβ3/β4-containing dimers increase K⁺ current, while Gβ5-containing dimers inhibit it. Kir3 channels are also inhibited by tyrosine phosphorylation mediated by receptor tyrosine kinase B activation via brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
