Target Information
Alpha-1-Antitrypsin (Alpha-1-AT) is synthesized in the liver and functions as an inhibitor of proteases such as trypsin, elastase, chymotrypsin, collagenase, leucocytic proteases, plasmin, and thrombin. Deficiency of Alpha-1-AT can lead to chronic obstructive lung disease (emphysema) and, less commonly, hepatic cirrhosis in infants and respiratory distress in newborns. Elevated Alpha-1-AT levels are observed as an acute phase response to tissue necrosis and inflammation, and are increased in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, bacterial infections, vasculitis, and carcinomatosis.
