Target Information

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of secondary granules in neutrophils.

LF exhibits a broad range of biological functions:

• Regulation of iron homeostasis
• Host defense against microbial infections
• Anti-inflammatory activity
• Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
• Protection against cancer development and metastasis

Lactoferrin acts as a first-line defense against microbial infections by binding Fe³⁺ and depriving pathogens of essential iron. It also possesses bactericidal and proteolytic activities, capable of cleaving arginine-rich sequences within microbial proteins.

Three isoforms of lactoferrin have been identified: LTF-alpha, LTF-beta, and LTF-gamma. Receptors for lactoferrin are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
