Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts not only on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission, but also on metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) coupled to G-proteins.
Group-I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5) stimulate phospholipase C and increase intracellular calcium.
Group-II and Group-III receptors (including mGluR2 and mGluR3) inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity.
