Target Information
This gene encodes human lysozyme, an enzyme that cleaves the beta(1-4) glycosidic linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan. Lysozyme is an antimicrobial agent found in human milk, spleen, lung, kidney, white blood cells, plasma, saliva, and tears. Missense mutations in LYZ are associated with heritable renal amyloidosis.
