Target Information
Eppin, an epididymal protease inhibitor, belongs to the WFDC family and to the telomeric cluster. The gene encoding this protein is localized to chromosome 20q12–q13. It expresses three mRNAs encoding two isoforms of a cystine-rich protein containing Kunitz-type and WAP-type protease inhibitor consensus sequences.
In mice, the gene lies in a cluster of Eppin-like genes on chromosome 2. After ejaculation, Eppin binds to semenogelin in seminal plasma and on human spermatozoa, forming a complex that provides antimicrobial activity and supports sperm survival and fertility. Eppin is a secreted protein expressed in epididymis and testis.
