Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a crucial role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is functionally associated with cell proliferation and cycle regulation. c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development.
The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression induces apoptosis. Antibodies against c-myc epitopes recognize Myc-tagged fusion proteins. Amplification of c-Myc is found in lung, breast, and colon carcinomas; N-Myc amplification occurs in neuroblastomas. Translocation of c-myc on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is seen in Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders. Aberrant c-myc expression is observed in various tumors including colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
