Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog: myf3) can activate muscle-specific genes or induce muscle cell conversion in various normal and neoplastic cells.
The regulatory domain of MyoD includes a 70 amino acid region with a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif. Other genes sharing sequence homology for the basic HLH domain include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (also known as MRF4 and herculin).
