Target Information
All cells within tissues are surrounded by an extracellular matrix (ECM) that provides shape and structure. The ECM is constantly remodeled, maintaining communication between cells.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are Zn²⁺-binding endopeptidases that degrade ECM components. They play roles in tissue remodeling, wound healing, angiogenesis, and tumor invasion. MMPs are regulated by TIMPs (tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases), which can suppress tumor cell invasion and act as metastasis suppressor genes.
