Target Information
This antimicrobial gene is part of a chemokine gene cluster on chromosome 17q. Chemokines are secreted proteins involved in immunoregulatory and inflammatory processes, divided into subfamilies based on N-terminal cysteine arrangement.
CCL8 belongs to the CC subfamily, characterized by two adjacent cysteine residues. This cytokine exhibits chemotactic activity for monocytes, lymphocytes, basophils, and eosinophils. By recruiting leukocytes to inflammation sites, it may contribute to tumor-associated leukocyte infiltration and antiviral responses against HIV infection.
