Ly49A is a gene encoding a protein expressed on the surface of natural killer cells. It plays a role in recognizing and eliminating virally infected or cancerous cells. Located on chromosome 6, Ly49A is part of a family of genes encoding similar receptors. The Ly49A protein interacts with various ligands, including viral and tumor cell components, and regulates NK cell activation and function. Mutations or variations in this gene have been associated with autoimmune disorders and cancer.
