Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, containing four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The encoded S6 ribosomal protein is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases, with five C-terminal serine residues phosphorylated by various kinases. Phosphorylation is stimulated by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein is implicated in cell growth and proliferation control through selective mRNA translation. Multiple processed pseudogenes exist throughout the genome.
