This gene encodes an activating transcription factor, which belongs to the ATF subfamily and bZIP (basic-region leucine zipper) family. It regulates downstream target genes involved in growth, survival, and other cellular activities.
Phosphorylation at serine 63 enhances transactivation and transcriptional activities, contributing to cell transformation.
Chromosomal translocations involving this gene (with FUS on chromosome 16 or EWSR1 on chromosome 22) produce chimeric proteins associated with angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and clear cell sarcoma.
A pseudogene is located on chromosome 6.
