Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD11a (alpha subunit of human LFA-1), a 170–180 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on B and T lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils.

Target Information

CD11a (LFA-1 alpha, ITGAL) together with CD18 constitute leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), the αLβ2 integrin. CD11a is implicated in activation of the LFA-1 complex and plays a central role in leukocyte intercellular adhesion through interactions with ICAM-1, -2, and -3.
It also functions in lymphocyte costimulatory signaling and is expressed on leukocyte plasma membranes in a low-affinity conformation. Cell stimulation induces a high-affinity state that supports tight binding to ICAMs.
CD11a is involved in immune cell interactions, tissue-specific migration, and regulation of differentiation, proliferation, and T-cell effector functions. Blocking CD11a function is an important therapeutic approach for inflammatory diseases.
Humanized anti-CD11a antibody Efalizumab (Raptiva) and simvastatin binding to CD11a allosteric sites are known to modulate immune activity.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms of CD11a have been identified. Diseases associated with CD11a dysfunction include benign cephalic histiocytosis and leukocyte adhesion deficiency.
