Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths per year in the USA. In 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in Mexico and the United States, later declared a pandemic by the WHO. Influenza A virus has 16 possible Hemagglutinin (HA) and 9 possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins.
- Hemagglutinin (HA): Facilitates viral attachment
- Neuraminidase (NA): Involved in viral release
These proteins elicit immune responses that help prevent infection or reduce viral replication. The 2009 H1N1 strain is a unique combination of human, swine, and avian influenza genes, including two new H3N2 pig virus genes of Eurasian origin. This distinct antigenic profile limits human immunity against the new swine influenza virus, though older age groups may have partial protection.
