Target Information
The Ras-related superfamily of guanine nucleotide binding proteins includes the R-Ras, Rap, Ral/Rec, and Rho/Rab subfamilies. Rab proteins play an essential role in endocytosis and biosynthetic protein transport, mediating movement of carrier vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi complex and secretory vesicles.
Rab 23 (HSPC137) is a 237 amino acid member of the Rab family, localized to the cytoplasmic side of the cell membrane. It is involved in intracellular protein transport and signal transduction mediated by small GTPases. Mutations in Rab23 may cause Carpenter syndrome (ACPS2), characterized by obesity, cardiac defects, polysyndactyly, and craniosynostosis.
