MYLK (Myosin Light Chain Kinase, MLCK)
MYLK is a serine/threonine kinase that phosphorylates myosin regulatory light chains to promote contractile activity through myosin–actin interaction.
It plays a critical role in smooth muscle contraction, vascular permeability, and tissue edema formation.
In the nervous system, MYLK regulates astrocytic process growth and neurotransmitter release at sympathetic synapses.
It is also involved in fibroblast apoptosis signaling pathways.
Smooth muscle and non-muscle isoforms are expressed in various tissues, with non-muscle isoform 2 being dominant.
The Telokin isoform binds calmodulin and is present in adult and fetal tissues.
MYLK contains one fibronectin type III domain and nine immunoglobulin-like C2-type domains and is likely down-regulated by phosphorylation.
