The eBioHMalpha5-1 monoclonal antibody reacts with mouse and rat CD49e (integrin alpha5 or VLA-5A). CD49e forms the receptor VLA-5 with CD29 (integrin beta1), binding fibronectin and fibrinogen. It is a type I membrane protein (~135 kDa) expressed on thymocytes, mast cells, activated T cells, and splenic B cells.
VLA-5 contributes to T-cell co-stimulation and cell adhesion. The eBioHMalpha5-1 antibody interferes with VLA-5-mediated adhesion and IgE-sensitized rat RBL cell degranulation on fibronectin-coated plates. Injected with anti-CD49d and anti-CD61, it can inhibit passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in mice.

Target Information

The integrin alpha 5 chain (CD49e) is part of the integrin alpha chain family. Integrins are heterodimeric membrane proteins composed of alpha and beta chains. The alpha5 chain undergoes extracellular cleavage to form disulfide-linked light and heavy chains that pair with beta1 to form a fibronectin receptor. Integrins mediate adhesion and participate in cell-surface signaling.
