Ferritin light chain 유전자는 ferritin 단백질의 light subunit을 암호화합니다. Ferritin은 원핵생물과 진핵생물 모두에서 주요 세포 내 철 저장 단백질로, heavy 및 light chain의 24개 소단위로 구성됩니다. Ferritin 소단위 조성의 차이는 조직별 철의 흡수 및 방출 속도에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다. Ferritin의 주요 기능은 철을 용해성이고 무독성 상태로 저장하는 것입니다. 이 유전자의 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환 및 hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자는 다수의 유사유전자를 가지고 있습니다.
