Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is crucial for male reproductive organ development and function (prostate, epididymis), and also affects nonreproductive tissues such as muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
Androgen receptor is a phosphoprotein and regulates MAP kinase signaling. Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations can lead to complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
