Target Information
CD163 (M130 antigen, Ber-Mac3, Ki-M8, SM4) is a 130 kDa membrane glycoprotein belonging to the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich superfamily. It acts as a receptor for the hemoglobin–haptoglobin complex and protects tissues from oxidative damage caused by free hemoglobin. CD163 is expressed on human monocytes and macrophages, particularly during the late phase of inflammation.
It is upregulated by IL-10, IL-6, and dexamethasone, and can be shed from the cell surface upon stimulation by LPS or PMA. CD163 binds hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes in a calcium- and pH-dependent manner and induces intracellular signaling cascades involving calcium mobilization and cytokine secretion (IL6, CSF1).
