Target Information
CD18 integrin beta 2 subunit is a 90 kDa type I transmembrane protein expressed on all leukocytes. It forms heterodimers with CD11 molecules (CD11a–d) to constitute leukocyte (β2) integrins such as:
- αLβ2 (CD11a/CD18, LFA-1)
- αMβ2 (CD11b/CD18, Mac-1, CR3)
- αXβ2 (CD11c/CD18)
- αDβ2 (CD11d/CD18)
These integrins are essential for leukocyte adhesion and migration. Absence or deficiency of CD18 leads to leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1) and related immune dysfunctions. CD18 is also a receptor for Mannheimia haemolytica leukotoxin, mediating cytolysis in susceptible cells. Two transcript variants encoding CD18 have been identified.
