BUBR1는 Ser/Thr protein kinase 계열에 속하며, 세포 분열 시 염색체가 방추체에 올바르게 부착될 때까지 anaphase를 지연시키는 유사분열 체크포인트의 구성 요소입니다. 방추체 체크포인트 손상은 유전적 불안정을 유발하여 암세포로의 전환을 촉진할 수 있습니다. 인간 세포에는 BUB1 유래의 두 가지 관련 체크포인트 단백질 kinase, hBUBR1과 hBUB1이 있으며, 이들은 유사분열 과정에서 중요한 역할을 수행합니다. hBUBR1은 세포가 너무 일찍 anaphase로 진입하지 않도록 하며, 다양한 암 조직에서 검출됩니다. 또한 BUBR1은 BCSG1(Breast Cancer-Specific Gene 1)의 결합 파트너로 확인되어, 유사분열 체크포인트를 약화시켜 유방암 진행을 가속화할 수 있음이 보고되었습니다.
