Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays key roles in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell proliferation and cycle regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc induces apoptosis in different cell types. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been found in several human tumors including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification occurs in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative conditions. Aberrant c-Myc expression occurs in diverse tumors such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, thyroidal, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
