Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 20. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
