Target Information

alpha-Internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed very early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from the better known neurofilament triplet proteins (NF-L, NF-M, NF-H), having similar protein sequence motifs and intron organization. Many mature neurons contain alpha-Internexin along with NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, while some express only alpha-Internexin. Antibodies to internexin serve as unique probes to study and classify neuronal types and to trace their processes in sections and tissue culture. Its early developmental expression also makes alpha-Internexin a useful marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to the neuronal lineage. The use of antibodies to this protein in brain tumor studies remains unexplored but may be of interest.
