Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. It encodes a half-transporter responsible for heme transport from mitochondria to cytosol and may play a role in metal homeostasis.
Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked sideroblastic anemia with ataxia.
