Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed in various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent in erythrocytes.
B2M is also found free in plasma and shares sequence homology with immunoglobulin constant regions. It has a beta-pleated sheet structure and plays a role in antigen processing, presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8+ cell activation.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. B2M levels are used to assess renal function in transplant recipients and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
