Target Information

Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that is a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I.
Human B2M is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on various cell types such as lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
It is also found in free form in plasma. The amino acid sequence of B2M is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions with a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure.
B2M is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
B2M levels are used as a marker for renal function and as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
