Target Information
The family of voltage-dependent chloride channels (CLCs) regulates cellular trafficking of chloride ions, which are critical for cell function. CLCs are involved in excitability of muscle and nerve cells, organic solute transport, and maintaining cellular volume.
- Gene Mapping: Human CLC-1 through CLC-7 map to chromosomes 7, 3q26, 4q32, Xp22, Xp11, 1p36, and 16p13.
- Expression:
- CLC-1: Highly expressed in skeletal muscle; mutations cause myotonia and renal salt wasting.
- CLC-2: Expressed in epithelial tissues (e.g., lung); potential therapeutic target for cystic fibrosis.
- CLC-3: Abundant in neuronal tissue.
- CLC-4: Found in skeletal and cardiac muscle and brain.
