Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone involved in protein folding and assembly. Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of T-cell receptors, and B-cell membrane immunoglobulins, but not with completed receptor complexes. It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER. Unlike soluble ER proteins with a KDEL sequence, calnexin lacks this motif but contains positively charged cytosolic residues for ER retention. Structurally, it includes a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
