Target Information
SOX9 plays a critical role in sex determination and differentiation of Sertoli cells. It is involved in chondrogenesis and regulates genes by acting as a transcription factor. Translocation of this gene can cause campomelic dysplasia. SOX9 contributes to testis formation from fetal gonads and is a key component in neuron-glia switch during spinal cord development. In prostate cancer, its normal functions are subverted to support tumor growth and invasion. It also influences neural crest precursor formation and melanin production. Expression is detected in adult testis, adult heart, and fetal brain.
