Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins that play essential roles in excitable and non-excitable cells. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) is unique in that its activation depends on both intracellular calcium levels and membrane depolarization.
The Maxi K⁺ channel core is a homotetramer containing voltage-sensing and calcium-binding domains. In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit is associated in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration required to open the pore by 5- to 10-fold.
