Target Information
The low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) gene family consists of cell surface proteins involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis of specific ligands. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) binds at the cell membrane and is internalized into lysosomes, where the protein is degraded and cholesterol becomes available for feedback regulation of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Mutations in the LDL-R gene cause familial hypercholesterolemia. LDL-R also serves as an entry factor for Hepatitis C virus along with SCARB1, CLDN1, and CD81. At least three isoforms of LDL-R are known.
