Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the parathyroid hormone family. It regulates endochondral bone development and epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during the formation of mammary glands and teeth. This hormone also plays a role in lactation by regulating calcium mobilization and transfer to milk. Its receptor, PTHR1, is implicated in humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants and alternative translation initiation sites have been observed, producing distinct isoforms and nuclear forms of the hormone.
