Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. During development, vimentin expression occurs alongside desmin and is later replaced by tissue-specific intermediate filament proteins. It plays a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal reorganization, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
