Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly in sequence across species, preventing recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS22 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with no counterpart in prokaryotic or fungal mitochondrial ribosomes. It lies telomeric of and is transcribed opposite to the forkhead box L2 gene. A pseudogene is located on chromosome Xq.
