Target Information
The protein encoded by the SERPINC1 gene is a plasma protease inhibitor and a member of the serpin superfamily. It inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases of the coagulation system, regulating the blood coagulation cascade.
This protein includes two functional domains:
- Heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus
- Reactive site domain at the C-terminus
The inhibitory activity is enhanced by heparin. Over 120 mutations have been identified in this gene, many of which are associated with antithrombin-III deficiency.
