Target Information
SMADs are members of the MAD-related family of molecules. These intracellular proteins are essential components in the signaling pathways of the serine/threonine kinase receptors of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily.
SMADs are categorized as:
- R-SMADs: SMAD1, 2, 5, 8, and 9
- Co-SMAD: SMAD4
- I-SMADs: SMAD6 and 7
SMAD1, 5, 8, and 9 share high sequence homology, and antibodies are available that recognize common sequences. SMAD8 and SMAD9 are often used interchangeably in literature. Mutations in this gene can lead to pulmonary hypertension, primary 2 (PPH2).
