Target Information
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver disease and is the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. HBV surface protein antigens (HBsAg) consist of three co-terminal proteins: large (LHBs), middle (MHBs), and small (SHBs, also called major) protein. LHBs and MHBs share a hydrophobic, membrane-spanning S domain, while MHBs includes an additional 55 amino acid region called preS2.
Globally, HBV affects approximately 350–400 million people and is a leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma. Immunization against HBV is a key component of preventive medicine and is widely implemented.
