Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are a complex class of ion channels involved in multiple physiological processes such as neurotransmitter release, heart rate regulation, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume regulation.
Four sequence-related potassium channel genes—shaker, shaw, shab, and shal—have been identified in Drosophila, each with human homologs.
The KCND3 gene encodes a member of the voltage-gated, shal-related potassium channel subfamily, forming voltage-activated A-type potassium channels that play a key role in the repolarization phase of the action potential.
This gene produces two isoforms of different sizes through alternative splicing.
